I am Local 174’s Bookkeeper. Prior to joining Local 174 in 2008, I was a bookkeeper for over ten years in the retail/service industry. I most recently worked for a company which was acquired by NW Computer Support about two years ago. The Local 174 Office is conveniently located next door to that company’s office and I enjoyed taking a walk through 174’s parking lot during breaks. Of course, 174’s parking area is actually that of Joint Council of Teamsters No. 28 and is shared by Local 117, Local 763 and the JC-28 staff. I found the people coming and going at the Teamster Building to be quite friendly, many of them giving me an encouraging comment or stopping to say “Hi.”  One day I ran into Local 174 Senior Business Agent Tim Allen, who asked me, “By any chance, are you a bookkeeper?” Local 174’s previous bookkeeper had moved on to a new job. The timing to make a change for me was perfect, and I’m very excited to be with Local 174 now, and to get the chance to learn more about the Teamsters and to meet with the members of this Local!

Staff PhotoLaurie Wood, Dispatcher, Hiring Hall Coordinator

Following my employment as the Administrative Assistant to the Secretary/Treasurer in 2004, I transferred to my current position as the Dispatcher and Hiring Hall Coordinator for the Heavy Construction members. Prior to my employment at the Teamsters, I spent a number of years as an Owner/Operator running 48 states.

The new position came with many new challenges, but I enjoy communicating with the members every day. I enjoy meeting them in person and connecting faces with names. I’m never too busy to assist the members or answer questions, so please feel free to stop by my new dispatch office located directly across the hall from the main office and say hello.

I began my relationship with the Teamsters working in the Pension Office at Northwest Administrators. In July of 1990 I accepted a position at Local 741. I was “adopted” by Local 174 during the merger of the two Locals in November of 2002. While working in a Union Office can be very challenging, it can also be rewarding. I feel that if I have helped one member resolve a problem, it has been a good day.

Staff PhotoTerrah Benson, Membership

I am a firm believer in “When one door closes another one opens.” I originally became in contact with Teamsters Local 174 when I processed payroll over at Allied Waste of Seattle.  In 2007 my door at Allied Waste closed and I started working for a Data Cabling company in Seattle but, in the meantime I wanted to be sure to stay in touch with Local 174.  In July of 2011 Ken Marshal, Vice-President/Business Agent, reached out to me about a position in Membership that was opening and I didn’t hesitate to jump at this opportunity. The timing couldn’t have been any better and I am excited for all the new challenges as well as getting to know the Members of this Local.

Some of my every day duties at Local 174 include processing monthly dues payments, assisting business agents with misalliances projects, updating member’s records as needed and answering any questions or concerns that a member may have.  At times I may not have the answer so I do my best to direct each member in the proper direction to best fit their needs. If there is anything that I can do for you, please do not hesitate to stop on in our give me a call.  I look forward to meeting you!
