| 2008 Food Drive THANKS, BOLENS AND GASCAS By BILL McCARTHY, Communications Specialist (May 21, 2008) Local 174 helps out whenever possible in the community efforts of other Labor organizations in our region. This year on Saturday, May 10th, the Local's Semi was front and center helping out the local folks with the National Association of Letter Carriers. The event was the 16th Annual NALC Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, which also involves United Way. Every year, patrons of the postal workers donate nonperishable food, which is picked up by the carriers on their routes and transported to collection areas. One collection area in 2008 was the Lynnwood Post Office facility. This is where the carriers need some help with their yearly one-day Drives — getting the collected donated foodstuffs distributed, always a monumental task. The 174 Truck was driven from its "mooring" in the parking lot at JC-28 Headquarters in Tukwila by 174 Trustee and Yellow Transportation driver Gary Bolen to the Lynnwood Post Office. There he met up with 174 Business Agent Carl Gasca. Also helping them out that day were Gary's wife Betty, son Cameron and daughter Megan; and Carl's son Charles. The Bolens and Gascas — along with lots of volunteers including Boy Scout troop members, postal workers and their family members, and United Way representatives — loaded the 174 Truck with donations. The loaded Truck was driven by Gary and Carl to a designated Everett Food Bank on Broadway Street, and unloaded by volunteers there. Then they drove back to the Lynnwood Post Office, loaded the Truck a second time, and took the second load to the Everett Food Bank for unloading, too. Join the Bolens and Gascas on their May 10, 2008 Food Adventure in this batch of photos taken during the day by them. They are great humanitarian ambassadors for Local 174, always ready and willing to help out when others are in need. |
